Bio Pig, 2001 Energy from and for pigs. Pig food is mixed with water and made into alcohol, which can power a generator to produce electricity. The excess heat of the generator is used to distil the alcohol and/or stored in huge buffer tanks. Solar panels, wind power and the incinerator are other sources of heat and electricity, which can heat water and greenhouses. The waste products from the distillery end up as a good low-carbohydrate, high-protein food for pigs. This mixture is combined with regular pig food and organic vegetables. On this diet, the pigs are healthier; they also taste better and still contain some alcohol as pork chops. Pig excrement becomes biogas that can be used for cooking and for generating electricity. With 100 pigs, AVL could provide the entire Free State of AVL-Ville with energy. |
